The “L” is Chicago's main rail network, serving as an urban heavy rail and metro rail. Although it is named the “L” as a shortened form of the word “elevated”, it now includes subway portions. In addition to the “L”, the Chicago Transit Authority runs about 2,000 buses, making it the second-largest public transportation system in the U.S.
The City of Chicago owns and operates two major airports, O'Hare and Midway. O'Hare International Airport is involved in domestic connections for many U.S. airlines, and is one of the busiest in the world.
Rapid transit is available to O'Hare from the downtown area via the Blue Line of the “L”. The trip from the Loop to Midway Airport takes about 30 minutes via the Orange Line. The South Shore Line's NICTD Northwest Indiana Commuter Rail Service shares the tracks with Metra trains, and travels to Gary/Chicago Airport, Chicagoland's third airport.
