Although people in Houston prefer to travel by car, perhaps because of the hot, humid weather and heavy ozone pollution, The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) operates bus and light rail service there. METRO also offers free rides on an uptown shuttle.

Because there are so many cars on the road in Houston, city planners have tried several innovative ways of reducing traffic. They include timed freeway entrances and cameras used to monitor and study traffic, as well as HOV lanes for car and vanpools. Official Park & Ride facilities in Houston double as pick-up areas for METROVan vanpools.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport is the larger of two airports in Houston. It is the hub for Continental Airlines. The William P. Hobby Airport operates small and medium sized flights.
