New York's public transportation system helps the city earn its nickname, “the city that never sleeps”. The subway runs 24 hours a day, moves approximately 3.5 million people a day, and is the largest in the world by track mileage. The city also boasts the largest bus fleet and rail system in North America.
A free ferry connects Staten Island with the rest of New York City, while an aerial tramway glides between Manhattan and Roosevelt Island.
The two major transit hubs are Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station. Buses, rail, and subways converge at both hubs, which are the two busiest rail stations in the U.S.
Both Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty Airport connect to Manhattan by rail. LaGuardia Airport, located 8 miles away from Manhattan, is accessible by bus.
