The modern transit era in Dallas began in 1983, when Texans voted in favor of regional transportation. Shortly thereafter, The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) began work on bus service improvements, rail transit, high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, carpooling, and mobility-impaired transit planning. DART rail and bus service connects with the Trinity Railway Express and The T bus lines in Fort Worth.
DART's most remarkable achievement is its 20-mile light rail system, which connects with the historic M-Line Streetcar at Cityplace Station. The M-Line is operated by the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority (MATA), a non-profit organization that provides free ridership to the public.
The stated mission of DART is to build, establish, and operate a safe, efficient, and effective transportation system that provides mobility, improves the quality of life, and stimulates economic development.
